    ON 1-2 NOVEMBER, 1950 DURING COMBAT OPERATIONS AGAINST HEAVILY ARMED ENEMY
    CHINESE FORCES, FATHER KAPAUN DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF BY
    DISREGARDING THE WITHERING SMALL ARMS, AND AUTOMATIC WEAPONS FIRE, HE CALMLY WALKED ABOUT THE BATTLEFIELD ADMINISTERING LAST RITES TO THE DYING AND GIVING MEDICAL AID TO THE WOUNDED. THOUGH HIS UNIT SUCCESSFULLY REPELLED THE ASSAULT, THE AMERICANS FOUND THEMSELVES SURROUNDED. TO AVOID ANNIHILATION, ABLE- BODIED MEN WERE ORDERED TO EVACUATE. HOWEVER, FATHER KAPAUN, FULLY AWARE OF CERTAIN CAPTURE, ELECTED TO STAY BEHIND WITH THE WOUNDED. HE WAS EVENTUALLY CAPTURED AND DIED IN AN ENEMY PRISONER OF WAR CAMP.
    BY HIS HEROIC CONDUCT ON THE BATTLEFIELD, AND HIS INSPIRING EXAMPLE, CAPTAIN KAPAUN UPHELD THE FINEST TRADITIONS OF THE U. S. MILITARY SERVICE, AND GAVE HIS LIFE IN THE NAME OF FREEDOM.
